Mortar Board Requirements, Eligibility and Minimum GPA Cutoff

Mortar Board is an exclusive honor society that recognizes academic excellence, leadership, and service. To become a member of this society, students must meet certain requirements, including a minimum GPA, completion of a certain number of credit hours, and demonstration of leadership and service in their community.

Being a member of Mortar Board is a valuable honor that can open doors to future opportunities. It provides a platform for networking with other high-achieving students and professionals, as well as access to scholarships, internships, and other resources.

However, it is important to acknowledge that the requirements for membership in Mortar Board can perpetuate systemic bias and social injustice. For example, the minimum GPA requirement may exclude students who face challenges such as financial hardship, health issues, or discrimination. Similarly, the emphasis on leadership and service may favor students who have had more opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities or who come from privileged backgrounds.

Despite these limitations, I believe that students should still strive to become members of Mortar Board. However, it is important to also consider other honor societies that prioritize both academic excellence and inclusivity. By joining these societies, students can demonstrate their commitment to excellence while also working to promote equity and justice.

Ultimately, the decision to join Mortar Board or any other honor society should be based on a careful consideration of one’s personal values and goals. By choosing to join a society that aligns with these values, students can make a positive impact on their communities and the world.
