Alonya Bates, Society Involvement Scholarship Recipient, Fort Valley State University

Alonya exemplifies the true Honor Society spirit by getting herself into a leadership position as quickly as possible and growing from there. Congratulations to Alonya! “I transferred to Fort Valley State University fall 2017, and my second week here I went to organizational fair on campus. I wanted to be apart of something on campus to keep me busy in my free time, so I signed up to join the Honor Society. A few days later I had my interview with Jon (Founder) and was invited  to come out to their next meeting.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I was really going to be an active member or not, because there weren’t many of us in the organization who actually showed up for meetings, etc. and Jon didn’t have much help at the time. I believe he had less than five people on his E Board. Which kind of scared me, but after the spring semester and we had our Mardi Grad event-that I thoroughly enjoyed, I was determined to make it my business to help the organization grow because I saw so much potential and I knew Jon was graduating that semester.  So with that being said I joined the E board as The Faculty Relations/Success Chair.

Last year over the summer, Jon added the remaining E board who didn’t graduate in a group chat…It was only four of us including the Vice President.  When I saw that the vice President didn’t step up to be the president, I knew that with my leadership skills I would be a great candidate. So I called Jon and asked him could I become the president, because I  didn’t want to go in the fall semester with no leader…and I didn’t want the organization to fall apart or subside. After we talked on the phone he gave me my interview time and date and needless to say I nailed it…and I am now the Organization’s second President!

I don’t take what I do lightly or for granted, and I know I am very blessed and fortunate to have almost a full E board (8 in total), and 40 plus members. We are growing and are going to continue to grow and elevate. We have 2 to 3 events a semester and meetings every month. I am working on so much for them, and I have great things in store for the organization and my fellow Wildcats.”
