Core Values Scholarship

October 15, 2020  |  By Tina Murtagh In Core Values Scholarship, Scholarship

Kaylin Sheppard, Core Values Scholarship Recipient, University of Texas

After graduating from CyFair High School in 2016, I made the decision to start my college career at Lone Star College, a local community college. Attending a community college allowed me to adapt to college life, save money, find what I truly wanted to do with my future, and learn how to prioritize my life with school and work. I completed my Associate of Arts and received a certificate in Pharmacy Technology at Lone Star College in Spring 2018 debt free!

I transferred to the University of Texas at Tyler for the Fall 2018 semester majoring in Kinesiology. I will graduate with my bachelor’s degree in May of 2020. Upon completion of my bachelor’s degree, I will pursue a master’s in hospital administration. I care for people and their well-being.  As a hospital administrator, I can create a safe and healing environment for patients and a supportive and fulfilling environment for employees. I have been at UT Tyler for a year now and I am loving college life. I have been able to find a great job in Tyler at UT Health Hospital working as a certified pharmacy technician. Even with managing work and school, I have found time to involve myself in extracurricular activities on campus. I have had the honor of being a founding member of UT Tyler’s Zeta Tau Alpha’s Lambda Sigma chapter. I am not only a founding member, but I have the honor of serving as the founding Risk Reduction and Education Chairman on our Executive Council Committee. Through Zeta I have built great relationships with other girls on my campus as well as strong relationships with faculty and staff. Holding an officer position has really pulled me out of my comfort zone. I have more confidence in myself, learning how to be a leader, know how to better communicate, and really care and listen to my fellow chapter members. I owe my success in school to my parents and my brother. They are the reason I blossom and continue to do well in school. They are constantly encouraging me and showing me, with love, that I can succeed at everything I do.

Receiving this scholarship is a huge blessing. I have been able to attend college without debt and this scholarship will help me to remain debt free.  This scholarship encourages me to be a better student, showing donors that I am a good steward of the good things that come to be. Choosing a career in the medical field is only one way I can give back to my community in the future. I hope to give of my resources to a scholarship organization to help benefit another student in the same way that I have been supported.
