Haley Andringa, Society Involvement Scholarship Recipient, University of Wisconsin

ACHS Systemic Bias

Hello Everyone! My name is Haley Andringa and I am honored to be receiving the Society Involvement Scholarship for my participation in a variety of different volunteer programs. I have done everything from volunteer Drumline performances to running a section of Lapham Peak Fright Hike Fundraiser as their director of makeup artistry to taking on a class of freshman as mentees throughout their first year of high school. I’ve always been one to raise my hand first and step up to the plate even if it means sacrificing hours of my own time. One of my biggest beliefs in life is, in order to be successful and truly understand others, you have to learn from people with experience. If it wasn’t for my high school band mentors I probably wouldn’t be the motivated and organized person I am today!

So far my college experience has been unlike any other in history, which is a really cool as well as kind of devastating thing to say. My admissions and academic advisors at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee have been doing everything that they can to make sure all of my credits are staying stable and that I am able to have a smooth transition next fall. Along with that, the accommodations office has been helping me tremendously to make sure that I’m as safe as possible in regards to food and housing. Having food allergies can be a tough thing to work around, but UWM has made it a very easy transition for me to come to their campus and feel safe eating in the dining hall, which is a lot harder than it sounds!

The Society Involvement Scholarship is going to help me tremendously with covering the costs of my first year of tuition. I’m thankful to have a family who’s taught me that if I want to do something, I always need to have a little skin in the game to make it personal and worthwhile in the end; the money from this scholarship is going to help me with my contribution greatly! I’ll be able to put my mind at ease a little more knowing that I have earned this scholarship, and that it’s enabling me to continue my post secondary education at UWM!
